Who: |
Tefta Ziko, George Ziko |
This is an engagement photo of two long-time Natick residents, taken around 1930, when they got engaged. George was an Albanian Orthodox immigrant from Korca, located in the SE corner of Albania, a predominantly Muslim country. He arrived in Natick at the age of 13 in 1912, along with three older brothers. None were married at the time of their arrival.
Tefta was the oldest daughter of Albanian immigrant parents, then living in Boston, and was introduced to George by her go-between Godparent living in Natick, Tefta Mungelli. George was 31; Tefta was 17. They were married on June 22, 1930, in this Depression year. They had three sons; Ralph, Ted, and Peter.
His occupation was that of an auto mechanic at Archies Garage, located on Washington Avenue. Later on, he opened a tire repair and sales shop on Court Street, and around 1935 opened an auto parts supply store on Washington Street, a business he operated until around 1970. The first family home he purchased was located at 9 Clarendon Street, which is now a parking lot.
George died in 1981 at the age of 82, and Tefta died in 2004 at the age of 92. They lived in Natick all of their lives.

I made this for my mother when I was eight years old. I was very proud of it - I did it all alone.
